I Am a Dreamer

dream_by_taenaronI love to dream.  I love to imagine what could be, other worlds, other realities.  Sometimes I wish I could remember my dreams better, and turn them into stories of my own, but mostly I enjoy visiting the worlds of others.  Science fiction and fantasy, but mostly fantasy, are the staples of my entertainment diet.  Mostly I read, but sometimes I watch movies and television as well.  I don’t like to read stories set in the real world.  Even when I venture into historical fiction, I prefer it to include something fantastical or magical.

I still like to imagine that I am the hero of a story, that I have special powers or abilities.  I like to imagine that if only I could find that blue box, that time twister, that Gay Deceiver, then all those worlds would be opened up to me.  I like to imagine that they are waiting out there for me, that when I’m old and gray, Gandalf will come and spirit me away.

Robert A. Heinlein proposed the World As Myth multiverse theory, the idea that everything we imagine or put into stories is real in a universe somewhere.  I love this idea.  If I believe in World As Myth, then all my dreams really do come true, somewhere, sometime.  This is the happiest, most satisfying belief I could have, and there is not a single piece of available science that rules it out.  Multiverse theory is now pretty common among physicists, and in an infinite variety of infinite universes, everything really is possible.

So I can still dream that somebody I’ll get to play the Game, touch the One Power, become a true vampire, train with a real wizard, and live forever.  The more I dream, the more I will live on somewhere.
