We’re definitely going! Looks like we’re going to wind up in a hotel or two, but that’s okay. I’ve got most of the food covered, went by Sam’s today and picked a bunch of stuff up. We’ve got enough money to cover gas and a hotel or two, even a meal or two out, for the trip down. Then Brian will get paid next Friday, so we’ll have plenty of money for the trip back. I’m so excited!

I’m so depressed tonight. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I started snapping at the kids during reading lessons, because I am so frustrated with that. They’re clamming up, they don’t want to cooperate anymore, and I don’t know what to do about it, how to make it fun again. I tried one thing today, and we’ll see how long it lasts. I took away the tv. Completely, permanently, no exceptions. I told them they can’t watch tv again until they learned how to read.

The biggest disadvantage of this house is that there is no good vantage point for viewing a good storm while staying high and dry. Not that we get many up here. But that just means that, when a good one rolls through, I want to see it all the more. If we were planning to stay here, I really would put up a nice deck outside the kitchen door, covered. I miss the deck in Austin.

Tips of the day:

Matches have a shelf-life when stored/worn in your jean pocket.

Rewards and punishments should be recycled when used on small children. “Pick up your toys or I’ll throw them away” mysteriously loses its effectiveness after a few days, as evidenced by the children involved assisting in putting toys in the trash bag.

Last weekend, Brian came down with the cold Liam had been fighting already for a week. It hit him pretty hard, and I could see it. I tried to make him take it easy over the weekend, repeatedly asking him to just sit with the kids and watch TV or lie down or something, but he refused, insisting on working on unpacking boxes and mowing the lawn and such. When Monday rolled around, he was so beat down by the cold and exhaustion that he wound up leaving work early that morning and spending the rest of the day in bed.

There are times when I don’t get the dishes put away immediately. In fact, there are times when the dishes from a particular meal, snack, or cooking episode don’t get put into the dishwasher for a full day. These are usually times when there is a lot going on, when I’ve had to leave the house right after eating and don’t come back until bedtime, when the kids have been bouncing off the walls and I haven’t had the time to put the dishes away, things like that.

Things are finally started to bud and bloom around here a little bit. I was beginning to wonder if we were going to get to June and still look like it was the dead of winter. It still looks dead, but up close you can see the trees and bushes starting to grow new leaves. It’s taken so long to get to this point, I’m interested now to see just how suffocating it will be when it all comes out.

We certainly haven’t had any spring storms yet to speak of. Wimpy little things, up here. It tends to just lightly rain…all day long…all week long.

I miss home.
